The two numbers that decide everything

The operating weight of the heaviest thing you load, and whether it drives on under its own power or has to be winched. Between them they set the axle rating, the deck construction and the ramp type. Matching the width to the machine

Under seven feet of machine and a 6-wide is cheaper to own, easier to store and easier to load alone. Skid steers and paired compact machines want a 7-wide. Above that, 8.5-wide and deckover exist for loads that overhang everything narrower - deckover clears the tires for a flat full-width surface, which is the only way two machines genuinely sit abreast.

Ramps matter more than people expect

Stand-up ramps store vertically and save yard space. Slide-out ramps are easier to position on your own. If the machine loads a dozen times a week, order the ramp hardware heavy - it is operated under load every single time and it wears accordingly.

Build

Deck length catches more people than rating

Measure the machine including anything left attached - bucket, forks, breaker - because that is the real length and it is often a foot or two beyond the spec sheet. A trailer that is rated correctly but a foot short is still the wrong trailer.

Width, or rating?

Decide which one is actually your constraint before you shop, because they point at different trailers. If the machine is heavy but fits inside seven feet, buy rating and stay narrow - it is cheaper and far easier to maneuver in a yard. If the machine overhangs, you need width, and deckover is the configuration that gives you a flat full-width surface. Compare the range before deciding.

Loading alone

Lower deck height and longer ramps are what make single-handed loading safe. If you are usually on your own, prioritize those over outright rating - a trailer you can load confidently beats one rated higher that you load carefully.

Servicing it

Two complimentary 40-point inspections come with every new trailer at 12 and 24 months, and on an equipment trailer they concentrate on what takes the load: bearings, brake adjustment on both axles, deck condition, ramp hardware and the frame welds around the tongue. Brake shoes and magnets are consumables and go faster on a trailer that runs at weight.

Getting an accurate price
