ATV and Powersports Trailers in Fort Worth
Two questions decide this, and neither is about the machine.
Where does the gear ride?
If helmets, fuel, tools and clothes can go in the truck, an open deck is cheaper, faster to load and perfectly adequate. If they cannot - or if there is no room left in the truck - that is the argument for enclosed, and it is the reason most people give.
Does the rig sit loaded?
Nothing on an open deck is secure. If the trailer stays hitched overnight, or sits in a hotel car park on the way somewhere, enclosed stops being a luxury.
Sizes
A 5x10 or 6x10 open deck carries one quad or a single-seat side-by-side. A 6x12 takes two machines, or one two-seat side-by-side with gear alongside. Enclosed starts making sense at 6x12 and up.
Motorcycles and golf carts
Both come up often enough to name. A single motorcycle fits a 4-wide or 5-wide enclosed with room for gear, and motorcycle searches convert well at this store. A golf cart sits comfortably on a 5x10 or 6x10 open deck, two on a 6x12 with the gate up.
Build
Dexter torsion axles, heavy-duty tie-downs rated for a machine rather than for cargo, diamond plate rock guard trim, radial tires and LED lighting. Get the D-rings placed for your actual machine at order - retrofitted anchor points are always a compromise. See the range.
What the machine weighs, and why it matters more than its size
A side-by-side that looks similar to another can be several hundred pounds heavier. Check the dry weight and add fuel, gear and anything bolted to it. Single-axle powersports decks have less headroom above the rating than people assume, and two machines on a single axle is usually the wrong answer.
Loading angle
A short ramp gate on a tall deck gives a steep angle, and anything long or low will catch. Ask about ramp length rather than assuming the standard gate suits your machine, and if the machine sits genuinely low, a tilt deck may be the better purchase.
Securing it
Rated D-rings placed for your machine rather than a generic row, strapped over the suspension so the machine cannot move independently of the trailer. Four points minimum, and get the positions set at build - retrofitted anchors bolt through rather than tie into the frame and are never as strong.
Texas heat
An unvented enclosed trailer in July is hard on anything with fuel, rubber or electronics in it, so specify roof vents on anything enclosed and more of them than seems necessary. Check pressures cold. Judge trailer tires by age and condition rather than tread depth, because ultraviolet degrades sidewalls on a trailer that has barely moved.
Where these go
Out to the sand and the trails, mostly, plus a steady number to ranch and acreage owners who use a side-by-side as working equipment rather than recreation. Those buyers usually want the open deck and a higher rating rather than walls.
Before the first run
Load the machine once at home before you load it somewhere public. Chock the trailer first, line up outside it rather than correcting on the ramp, and re-tension the straps after the first ten minutes - they settle more than people expect. Check pressures cold on both trailer and machine.
One machine or two
Two machines on a single axle is nearly always the wrong answer. If a second machine is even a possibility, price the tandem now rather than trading in twelve months.
