Winter Maintenance Tips

  • How To

With the winter months right around the corner, many trailer owners are getting ready to store their trailers away for the season. As a first-time owner, it can be a little difficult to know exactly what to prepare for - that’s why we’ve created a short guide to help you properly store your trailer for the winter.

An important step you should take in preparing your trailer for storage is to wash off all dirt and debris, giving your trailer a proper cleaning prior to storage is the easy way to prevent rust and grime build-up.

Another precautionary measure you should consider is removing your trailer’s battery. If your trailer model features a brake battery, it's best to remove the battery and have it stored indoors in order to maximize your battery's life. Removing your trailer’s battery also gives you the benefit of being able to charge it intermittently throughout the winter months.

Before you store away your trailer for the winter you should also inspect and grease any moving parts. Properly inspecting and greasing your trailer’s moving parts will ensure that your trailer stays in top shape for when it's time to tow again.

Many trailer experts also recommend having your trailer raised in order to relieve the tension placed on your trailer’s suspension and tires. This can easily be achieved by placing jack stands underneath your trailer’s frame and raising the trailer enough for the tires to clear the ground.

Lastly, consider investing in a trailer cover or tarp, especially if you plan on storing your trailer outside. This will help prevent corrosion and will limit your trailer's exposure to weathering.

By following these simple steps, you can be assured that your trailer will remain safe and road ready for next season!
