How do I know if my truck can tow the trailer I want?
Check your vehicle's owner's manual for its tow rating, which is the maximum weight it can safely pull when fully loaded. The trailer's GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) should never exceed your tow vehicle's rating, even when the trailer isn't loaded to capacity.
Factor in passengers, cargo in the truck bed, and tongue weight when calculating your total load. The NATM recommends building in a 20% safety margin above your typical payload.
Does my trailer need working lights even if my truck's lights are visible?
Yes. Minnesota law (§ 169.50) requires every vehicle being drawn at the end of a combination to have at least one tail lamp exhibiting a red light visible from 500 feet to the rear, plus stop lamps and turn signals.**
This applies regardless of whether the tow vehicle's lights are visible around the unit.
Do I need a title for my trailer in Minnesota?
Minnesota does not require a title for trailers with a gross vehicle weight of 4,000 lbs or less, unless a lien exists or a title was previously issued. In those cases, the Minnesota registration card serves as proof of ownership.
Trailers over 4,000 lbs gross weight must be titled. All trailers used on public roads require registration regardless of weight.
