Not every vehicle needs a roof over it. Auction pickups, a trade heading to the shop, a project moving between properties. An open deck handles all of it at a fraction of the weight and cost of an enclosed hauler.
What separates a good one
Ramps that deploy and stow without a fight. Enough tie-down points to secure a car properly rather than creatively. Axles that track true with weight on the deck - ours run Dexter for that reason.
Where open wins

Enclosed is right for a show car. For everything else, open is usually the better buy and the difference buys a lot of diesel.

An open deck is hundreds of pounds lighter than an enclosed hauler, tows easily behind a half-ton, and costs appreciably less - which is the whole argument when the car is a project rather than a finished vehicle.
