Understanding Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of Your Trailer:

If you own a trailer or are thinking about buying one, you’re probably familiar with the term Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). It’s the specific number that tells you how much weight your trailer can safely carry, including its own weight. Knowing your trailer’s GVWR isn’t just for new buyers—even seasoned trailer owners might not fully understand this critical safety metric. We’ll break this down so you can tow safely and confidently.

What is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)?

GVWR is the maximum weight a trailer can handle, including its own weight (called curb weight), plus the weight you’re hauling. This limit is set by manufacturers based on the design, axles, tires, and overall structure of the trailer. You’ll find the GVWR on a sticker placed on the frame of your trailer, near the tongue. Here’s some key terms you need to know:

Why Does GVWR Matter?

Knowing your GVWR isn’t just a safety measure. It’s about protecting your equipment, avoiding unexpected accidents, and complying with local laws.:

  • Mechanical Damage: Overloading puts excessive stress on your trailer and tow vehicle, leading to wear and tear or even breakdowns.
  • Safety Risks: Heavier loads reduce braking performance, making it harder to stop quickly and increasing the chance of accidents.
  • Legal Consequences: Many states impose fines or penalties for exceeding weight limits, and you might also face liability issues in the event of an accident.

How to choose a trailer with appropriate GVWR

TrailersPlus offers a wide range of trailers with varying GVWRs to meet your hauling needs:

GVWR Range - TrailersPlus
  • Understand the weight and size of what you’re hauling - Start by calculating the total weight of your cargo, including tools, equipment, or materials you plan to carry regularly.
  • Pick a trailer with a GVWR higher than your cargo’s weight - Understanding the weight and size of what you're hauling is crucial. Review the specifications of equipment, machinery, and tools, which can be easily looked up online. Not every item, such as side-by-sides or heavy equipment, weighs the same, even if they are close in size. Being thorough with these details ensures safety and efficiency when selecting a trailer.
  • Check that your tow vehicle can handle the trailer’s GVWR - The tow vehicle must be capable of handling the trailer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). This is non-negotiable when understanding how much you can tow. If the combined GVWR of the trailer and tow vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required to tow it. If you don’t have a CDL and the combined GVWR of the trailer and tow vehicle requires one to haul, you should avoid making the purchase.
  • Consider features like ramps or hydraulic lifts based on your needs - For heavy or bulky items, prioritize trailers with features like fold-up ramps or hydraulic lifts for easier loading and unloading.

Understanding GVWR is key to towing safely and protecting your investment. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a long-time trailer owner, knowing your trailer’s limits will help you avoid costly mistakes and keep your towing experience smooth and worry-free.
